Information about curriculum

Kide Science is a supplementary STEAM curriculum. Our lessons enhance pre-existing core curriculums with hands-on, skills-based activities rooted in play: this is the most developmentally appropriate way for young children to learn. In a Kide lesson, children are encouraged to role play as investigators, which means they then act as investigators! This achieves our goal: for children to develop crucial science process skills instead of only their conceptual understanding. Science process skills (such as observation, classification, measuring and prediction), can be applied across all curriculum areas. And so, Kide provides lesson plans to suit many relevant cross-curricular topic themes, subjects and skills including Literacy, Physical Development, Social and Emotional learning and Geography. Teachers can flexibly use our lesson bundles, our search bar and our filter tabs to find a lesson plan that will enhance their timetables. With Kide, children can develop skills over time, over many contexts and in lessons that are meaningful to a child’s own interests.

Overview
The product uses a Playful Inquiry approach based on cultural-historical and inquiry-based learning theories. It emphasizes meaningful cultural practices and peer interaction. In Kide, children engage in a shared play world as scientists, with teachers as co-players. The approach unfolds in three phases: 1) Activating the playworld with a story, 2) Experimentation with open-ended activities, and 3) Communication and conclusion, where findings are shared. Imagination and creativity are central to this method.

We interview users before we design new features to understand what they need so that we don’t design anything unnecessary. We run usability tests on the designs with our target users and make changes in designs. We gather feedback on the features from the users also after launch with usability tests and user interviews as well as looking at analytics data and make improvements where needed. Our software development process is lean and iterative meaning that making improvements is in our DNA. We also do expert evaluations regularly.

We do constant usability testing and user interviews to learn more about our target audience and their needs in relation to our product. One of our founders does scientific research related to our pedagogy which helps us improve that side of our product. We conduct surveys to measure e.g. the impact of our product on children.

    Large implementation example

    Cooperation project made with NGO Dubai Cares in World Expo for months. We are also starting a project in Mexico with the Ministry of Education in Mexico and Sesame Workshop and NGO PAUTA in Mexico. Also state level deals in the USA. We are also in the situation that Kide Science Finland team has over 10 employee team but our new owner in the USA has over 100 people team and cooperations with national foundation like Gates Foundation and state level adoptions.
