Impact on learning

Theory

eKidz leverages Connectivism, Cognitivism, and Social Learning Theory to facilitate language learning without the need for teachers. Reading Scaffolding Features (RSF)—such as animated illustrations, syllable highlighting, and recording/playback—enable a personalize learning experience. By incorporating AI, eKidz engages learners in self-directed reading and encourages the imitation of native speakers. Through age-appropriate pedagogy, eKidz supports cognitive, social, and emotional growth.

Information about curriculum

The curriculum design of eKidz is customized, leveled reading practice for individual, small group, and whole group instruction. There is limitless potential for AI-supported reading instruction through texts and tasks that engage and motivate the reader. Whereas common early reading programs focus mainly on decoding skills, eKidz guides young, diverse readers toward reading proficiency through scaffolded text choices and integrated literacy applications – all guided with evidence-based, individualizing AI feedback. Reader: eKidz recognizes that every learner is different and has a unique learning progression. eKidz addresses different learning styles with unique adjustability of support tools and AI-feedback features. It aids the development of biliteracy for multilingual learners. All texts and features are currently available in English, Spanish, German, and Ukrainian. Learners become confident readers in a target language and also in their home language. Text: eKidz features a broad variety of fiction and non-fiction books. The texts were developed and evaluated by scientists with a focus on their readability in multiple languages. Flexibly adjustable scaffolding tools support the decoding and comprehension process, such as leveled text choice, animated visuals, read-aloud-modeling, and other graphic support features. Task: eKidz guides young readers as they transition from reading skills practice to applied reading strategies. AI-guided, immediate scoring and feedback features focus on reading fluency, accuracy, and reading comprehension. AI also provides concrete, personalized feedback to the reader resulting in improved reading outcomes. eKidz utilizes neuro-linguistic research on literacy as an integrated cognitive process, which combines all four language domains to build reading proficiency. Text exploration enables varied possibilities as recorded retelling or written response to text-related prompts engage the reader. Instruction: eKidz is suitable as an independent practice tool but allows for a wide range of creative and multi-sensory activities during direct instruction. SMART diagnostic tools and AI-voice recognition features provide the teacher with detailed performance reports and assist in assigning customized, integrated intervention tools. eKidz promotes the seamless integration of practice and assessment.

Pedagogical design

Overview
The pedagogical design of eKidz incorporates multiple educational theories to support language learners independently. Connectivism shapes its use of technology and social connections, while Cognitivism promotes active learner participation. Social Learning Theory encourages students to mimic native speakers, enhancing pronunciation. Age-appropriate pedagogy ensures developmental alignment, and Reading Scaffolding Features like text highlighting and recording support student progression. The design fosters independence, reflection, and collaboration.

User Experience

Accordion toggle
User interface
*Intuitive Userface* eKidz apps provides three different interfaces according to user type i.e. administrators/ teachers, assistant teachers and students. With this eKidz ensures that every group is led to the appropriate landing page i.e. while teachers and administrators on desktops are led to the “Class Management” screen, students are led to their assigned target language and level “Books Overview” where they last worked. *Evolutionary improvements of Interface* eKidz’ user interface for our students and teachers has evolved and improved as a result of testing, consultation with user groups, professional advice and feedback from users. Introduced changes allow teachers to address the unique needs of each student in learning literacy and acquiring language skills while their students are guided to specifically selected content. 1. Teachers can select the language skill on which a student should focus to progress in their target language. The selection can vary by language if a student is learning multiple languages. Initially, that feature was developed within each student’s profile. 2. Recognizing that classes and groups might have temporarily set goals i.e. emphasized reading week or listening comprehension focus week, we created a Goal Section in the Class Results and allow teachers to either select one linguistic focus for whole groups, overriding individual setting for a period of time, or to set individual goals directly from the class list. 3. On logging in, students are led to their assigned language level and see the immediate, color coded goals. These goals are presented as flower petals on each book. A transparent petal indicates an optional activity; light blue petals indicate mandatory activities that need to be completed in order to activate the comprehension tests. Red petals will indicate activities started but not yet finished, and in green petals represent completed activities. 4. The AI reading fluency tests results are presented as a % of correctly read words. This is to avoid overloading the developing student with too much information. Once a student has achieved the threshold score, reading speed is then also reported. This reading speed is analyzed and a combined reading value (based on both indicators) is displayed at the stage when the student can change focus from accuracy to reading speed. With this visual display and option to sort the class by stage and progress in oral reading skills, we allow teachers to regroup students according to the skills and implement supporting, differentiated activities in class. 5. The login scenarios are currently evolving, using classroom cases studies, which eKidz closely monitors. Teachers and student feedback is incorporated with frequent evaluations done in collaboration with school districts and regional governments. The digitalization of school is an ongoing process and with new hardware and evolving infrastructure. As a result, eKidz’ improved its “log out logic” for students. The checkbox “Keep me signed in” was introduced last academic year for students. This UI/UX enhancement allows differentiation between home use, where a student does not need to log out on a home device vs. school use on shared devices that prevails in our European anchor markets, where students need to be logged out after a certain inactivity time to allow next user to login into their own learning space.

Data-driven product development
eKidz is privileged to collaborate with the best scientific institutions in Germany and Ukraine. Individual researchers are also onboard, supporting eKidz’ development. There are two significant developments introduced last academic year: 1) AI Literacy Assistant and 2) Adaptive Feedback. Both developments were completed in two R&D projects funded by the federal government of Germany. The improvements are: 1. Redesign of the leveling methodology of texts for all the levels aligned with all 4 language contexts - German, English, Spanish, Ukrainian. 2. Redesign of the comprehension questions tests by category of questions (informational vs. higher thinking), by type of questions (single vs multiple choice), by linguistic level. 3. AI automatic scoring of oral reading fluency is evaluated by researchers and when speech recognition issues are found i.e. noisy class environment, whispering of children during read aloud exercise UI is introduced to prevent the issues and ASR is trained to correct for the specific issues. The details of this can be reviewed in the section on Scholastic Collaboration in The Learning Series document. While eKidz operates under strict data protection rules of the EU’s and German regulators, it can provide upon request by the data owner - such as states, school districts and individual schools - a wealth of data on the utilization of the eKidz app. eKidz has the ability to provide detailed reporting when required, in particular, while in use in humanitarian projects. Currently, the development of eKidz.eu is scientifically supported by the Fraunhofer Institute, the University of Regensburg in Germany, and the University of Applied Science of Flensburg. It is also affiliated through a research project with the University of Calgary. Detailed scientific evaluations on the basis of parents’ consent are implemented. A current example is a scientific evaluation of Bavarian classes implementing eKidz in a 4-6 week intervention vs non-participating control groups. This is at the request of the Bavarian Ministry of Education and led by the University of Regensburg. Another example is an ongoing evaluation in the context of the humanitarian project in collaboration with national NGOs in Ukraine and supported by the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine. All the evidence and data insights are worked into the form of enhancements of the product and passed to the development team for implementation.

Geographic focus
eKidz can implement a subsection of the language program. For example the team is currently adding the LatAm version of Spanish program. If there is an element in the visualisation that requires adjustments i.e. Lebkuchen in Germany vs Turron in Spain as a Christmas sweet, we adapt the text and illustration. That is only possible as eKidz has an internal content publishing software and ownership of all the IP rights for texts, translations, illustrations and audio.

Pricing Strategy

eKidz is focused on B2G and B2B while available to B2C over the app stores. We offer annual subscriptions based on different models by students, by students and number of classes/groups, by pool of schools, by large pools for state licences. All licences outside of B2C are annual licences paid upfront and in many cases for a period of several years. For the larger pools we price the % of active users based on our experience and a potential for a roll out. eKidz' subscriptions are accessible and target broad range or students and schools rather than a selected privileged population. However we do have special pricing terms for the special needs education as we believe eKidz' impact is significant with these students.

Large implementation example

eKidz holds three state licences in Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Bremen in Germany. Since 2021 the team was working with each state government to support the roll out with all primary schools and provide professional teachers development. eKidz is one of the 42 national projects that are part of the New Educational Platform (NEP) developed and supported by the federal government in Germany. The projects are focused on life long learning and EdTech innovation that should be made available to every student over the NEP in Germany. eKidz partnered up with two national NGOs in Ukraine to implement one of the large scale educational projects supported by the Humanitarian Fund for Ukraine in the 6 Eastern regions, rural area and in a close proximity to the frontline. The project positively impacted the learning outcomes and mental health of over 35000 students and 11000 teachers are beneficiaries.

Equity of access & Gender

Accordion toggle
Product usage between genders
Using digital platforms from an early age boosts the confidence and ability of children in computer literacy and increases the value they can extract from other digital tools. Using digital learning platforms such as eKidz, acquaints children, especially girls, (who have been shown to lag behind boys in benefitting from digital tools) and redresses the digital divide at a time when the gender divide in internet use is widening. This is a step towards empowering participation in society. Both boys and girls benefit from the flexibility and convenience of digital tools such as eKidz. Learning can take place at a time, place and pace that fits in with their lifestyle. Interacting dynamically is an engaging and motivating way of learning that helps lessons stick. In the words of Benjamin Franklin: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.” Utilizing digital technologies make education more equitable and inclusive, especially when the tool provides improved flexibility and capacity for personalization. This meets the needs of diverse boys and girls at the point where they need. Digital technologies offer benefits by diversifying not just what is learned but where, when and how it is learned.

Catering to the needs of marginalized or disadvantaged child groups
eKidz was developed with a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in order to progress the education of students experiencing educational shortcomings as a result of language barriers. In the forefront of this development were families with diverse social and cultural backgrounds and migrant families, children marginalized through social, economic and/or relocation. For reasons of accessibility and reach, we focused on mobile technology (by the end of 2022, 68 percent of the world’s population were smartphone users). Mobile platforms meet the strong demand for technology that integrates both training and diagnostics, and makes education accessible to the most poorly served in rural communities, war zones and in socio-economic deprivation. eKidz facilitates the incorporation and education of non-native speaking students who are insecure in a school’s taught language medium by accelerating their reading, listening, comprehension, written and spoken language acquisition. These students can continue learning and practicing their new classroom language while at home without the teacher’s supervision or a supportive adult (or in class), guided by eKidz’ cutting edge AI technology, without fear of embarrassment or judgement. Scaffolded content which is easy and intuitive to navigate, allows children who have been distanced or excluded from education for whatever reason, to learn and progress their reading, listening, speaking and writing skills - crucial to be able to participate in life as an adult. eKidz is a holistic, language teaching and learning super tool which empowers reading, writing, listening, speaking and thinking in multiple languages, independent of the direct supervision of a teacher. It is both a classroom tool and remote learning tutor. Its vision is to reform education giving access to all children everywhere, empowering their future and enabling their potential. eKidz is an optimal tool for targeting underserved communities lacking access to qualified teachers and available teaching time in elementary education. This service is evidenced in Germany where, second language learners with migrant backgrounds benefit from eKidz. Likewise in Ukraine, for whom eKidz rapidly scaled up a Ukrainian language version in response to the emergency situation in education, resulting from the invasion which destroyed schools in close proximity to the combat area. We want to expand novel eKidz' AI empowered learning tools to children via the saturation of powerful, cheap mobile devices (McGreal, 2005). The internet allows us to reach many underserved young students globally, via schools and privately at home when in emergency the schools are operating online only. eKidz offers its innovative literacy and learning solution to school districts and governments, as well as international donors operating in emergencies, via subscription model. eKidz’ language mix includes English, Spanish, German (globally ranked as the most desired languages) and Ukrainian - introduced in response to emergency needs. The scalable and well architected solution allows short lead to market with new content languages and interchangeability of the AI models in place. The app is available in the form of iOS, Android and Web App. The learning outcomes of eKidz will enhance lives through improved academic results, expanding capabilities and greater employability - reducing poverty, and positively impacting on health and sustainable development.

Principles of inclusion and equity
*Accountability* : eKidz content incorporates cross-curricular themes and competencies, which portrays the positive and negative outcomes of behavior - modelling the acceptance of responsibility. *Challenge of Bias*: Through its characters, assertive, creative and confident female characters are created and promoted along with empathetic and thoughtful male characters. The plots to stories integrate several subjects, e.g. history, social studies, as well as STEM. Extracurricular activities are dealt with equally across genders, in contrast to age-old stereotypes. *Promoting Empathy and Intersectionality* : Characters are taken from a variety of geographic locations, cultures and indigenous communities as well as ethnic groups or national minorities - this is to foster a global understanding of shared loves, needs, aspirations and fears. *Inclusion and Accessibility* : The eKidz app incorporates specific facility to assist students with special education needs. For example, fonts, such as the dyslexia friendly type, allow easier access to content and the fully adjustable color scheme allows students with visual impairment to personalize the screen for optimal learning.

This product promotes AI equity
Historically, children found it difficult to interact with voice technology, due to the pitch, pronunciation and speed of their speech. By its very nature, eKidz in its drive to provide equity, developed its voice recognition technology (Automatic Speech Recognition) to not only understand but to also analyze and diagnose children’s speech. eKidz provides a unique student-centered, authentic, formative assessment that puts the progress and achievement in the hands of the students. eKidz is built for equitable access, independent of location. Data protection, privacy and security makes it a reliable and secure instrument suitable for children. eKidz uses secure data centers, its own encryption and data storage systems, isolating data according to local and federal legislation (federated Azure servers) ensuring the data compliance in each region of operations and works with researchers on two R&D project in the field of ASR (voice recognition) for children’s voices and adaptive feedback in Germany. eKidz practices digital responsibility and addresses risks. The ASR and AI functions remain non-generative, as it is students who generate the work and AI facilitates the diagnosis, feedback and prompts to guide students. This minimizes external risks. eKidz’ team believes that AI technology solutions must be locally driven and owned, and is focused on building an evidence base informed by the communities eKidz serves to ensure AI technology can improve the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people.
