Impact on learning

Theory

Afinidata’s solution, focused on vulnerable populations, uses machine learning and a randomized control trial to enhance early childhood development. It equips caregivers with tools to foster nurturing environments, improving child development. The Theory of Change operates on three levels: changing caregiver perceptions, improving caregiving practices, and mitigating developmental risks. Results show significant reductions in developmental risks, demonstrating the program’s effectiveness.

Information about curriculum

Our substantial content library comprises over 1,500 science-based activities, designed by in-house child development experts and guided by frameworks from academic advisors at Harvard, Swiss TPH, and UNICEF. All content follows a conversational and microlearning format, incorporating insights from local partners like NGOs, municipalities, and governments. Available in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Arabic, our content is accessible to diverse populations. Furthermore, our machine learning content recommendation system, developed in collaboration with ETH machine learning lab, has shown to increase content usage among target families. Afini's curriculum is grounded in a combination of four well-established frameworks: the Montessori Method, CDC's Developmental Milestones, Caregiver Reported Early Development Instruments (CREDI), and the WHO Nurturing Care for Early Childhood Development framework. This integrated approach ensures that the content is comprehensive, evidence-based, and tailored to support a child's overall development. The curriculum is designed to track and promote the achievement of key developmental milestones, focusing on motor skills, social-emotional development, language, and cognitive abilities. At the start of the program, caregivers complete an initial assessment based on the CDC's developmental milestones, which helps determine the child’s current developmental stage. This assessment, conducted monthly, provides personalized reports and guides the recommendations for age-appropriate content. The personalized content is informed by the Montessori Method, emphasizing hands-on, child-led learning, and the OMS Nurturing Care framework, which highlights the importance of responsive caregiving and emotional support. This combination of frameworks ensures that Afini’s curriculum is not only grounded in developmental science but also adaptable to the individual needs and pace of each child.

Data-driven product development
After analyzing evidence and data insights, the Afini team engages in a comprehensive process of content improvement. This process involves reducing text for simplicity, designing diverse media formats for better comprehension, and creating additional content to assist caregivers in enhancing their children's developmental milestones. The focus is on the developmental areas identified as needing the most improvement. Our algorithm is updated with assessment results from each registered child to deliver personalized content that helps users address any failed milestones. Additionally, the Afini team and algorithm analyze frequently asked questions from user interactions to generate more content that clarifies doubts and enhances users' knowledge of child development. This continuous feedback loop ensures that our product remains effective and responsive to users' needs, ultimately improving learning outcomes.
